Joined Indian Prairie in 2018. Previously worked to support all facets of technology at Dominican University where he served as Assistant Vice President and Deputy Chief Information Officer. Under his leadership, the technology department developed and maintained continuous efforts to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline processes while providing quality services to students and faculty.
Prior to joining Dominican, Smeets managed labs and digital media for Loyola University and served as the Assistant Director of Technology for University of Delaware. He earned his bachelor's degree from Loyola University and his master's from the University of Delaware and is working on his dissertation to fulfill a Doctor of Education from Loyola University Chicago.
Under Dr. Karen Sullivan's leadership, the district has focused on preparing students for their future—guiding the district in its 1:1 technology plan, the integration of makerspaces and computational thinking, digital resources to personalize learning, all while achieving a record-setting ACT score and academic performance significantly higher than state averages.
