Not your mama’s art class: bringing arts to the 21st century classroom
Challenging K-8 students through arts-embedded instruction

Arts has always been a critical part of Compton Unified ethos. Three of our sites have received the prestigious Turnaround Arts Grant, which has infused schools with creative resources aimed to guide an “arts-fueled transformation.” All K-8 students have access to the three-stage visual arts curriculum, Meet the Masters. Compton has re-designed this curriculum and by integrating technology, creativity, collaboration, and instruction from a professional artist to truly immerse students in art and 21st century learning. Students also extend their understanding of the master artists by using technological enhancements, such as QR codes and Aurasma (triggered from their art pieces), to redirect the viewer to self-made videos where they can gain further information about a focus artist. After students complete the Meet the Masters art piece for each artist, they are encouraged to create their own art piece based on the style or technique they learned from the master artist.
