Using data to provide personalized learning experiences
Combining blended learning and project-based learning to support equity

We are committed to providing an equitable education for all students by providing  personalized classroom settings that support project-based learning (PBL). To provide more equitable outcomes, Compton Unified developed a blended learning classroom model that combines personalized learning (using adaptive computer programs) with real-world learning opportunities and problem solving methods found in PBL. This model, Data Driven Blended Learning +PBL, is designed to embrace the diversity of all Compton students including our high percentage of African American and English Learner students.

Equity is at the center of the model, as the blended instructional model targets ELL and  Response to Intervention (RTI) goals. The instructional design integrates three components in a rotating station model: small group instruction, technology stations, and PBL. Focusing on short cycle assessments for continuous growth, students use adaptive software that personalizes content and provides data for teachers to develop small group instruction. Teachers use data collected by the adaptive learning program to individualize student learning experiences. Small group instruction drills down to students’ individual needs. Meanwhile, students apply their knowledge in PBL cooperative groups to solve inquiry-based questions.
