The “why” behind the work

While our programs provide students with an excellent foundation for their careers, we find that this does not adequately prepare students for the challenges of the workplace. We aspire to build capacity for teachers to expand RWL activities in order to improve student achievement and outcomes. With the help of the road map developed during Digital Promise’s RWL Challenge Collaborative, we were able to show teachers how to implement successful activities.

Reaching out to local Brokers allowed us to develop and strengthen community partnerships while providing internships for students in their fields of interest.  Our greatest successes are when we inspire students who were not considering college. “After talking to an expert in the field,” they shared, “it readjusted my mindset– I do need to consider schooling after high school.” As students begin deciding on their career paths, having Brokers participate in guest speaker events to explain the real-world application of classroom material increases the relevance of the material to the students and helps them to make informed decisions. Our guest speakers, some who have not had these same opportunities, can effectively encourage students to really understand the career boost that the curriculum is providing.
