RULER uses an evidence-based approach, applying the best research to developing students' soft skills in order to improve outcomes. Our adoption focuses first on staff, seeking to improve the emotional intelligence of the adults providing school-based services to students. Recognizing the importance of emotions in learning, we’ve undertaken a district-wide effort, capitalizing on leading ideas and research on emotions. Specifically, staff and students learn to Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Regulate emotions. Using a series of "Anchor Tools," or strategies for emotional regulation, and an online platform that leverages technology tools to further learning, staff and students learn and grow throughout the year. The RULER program does not mandate any curriculum, but rather is an approach used by staff and students.
