Creating and sustaining an innovative learning environment that breaks down all barriers to student learning
We know that barriers to healthcare can negatively impact attendance and learning. During the 2017 school year, the Owsley County School District participated partnered with Manchester Memorial Hospital and the local health department to offer health care services at school for staff and students as well as through telemedicine. The district also partnered with the Elgin Children's Foundation to offer free dental care to students in grade K - 6. In the fall of 2017, a part-time social worker was employed in the district, funded by the Elgin Children's Foundation. Dental care and social worker services continue, with ongoing support from the Elgin Children's Foundation, and the district now partners with Mountain Comprehensive Health Care to provide a nurse and nurse practitioner.
