Creating and sustaining an innovative learning environment that breaks down all barriers to student learning
Owsley County averages 20 snow days a year, which creates barriers to accessing meals and instruction for its 740 students. Leveraging the district’s 1:1 device program where students are allowed to take devices home for a $50 fee (the majority receive a waiver based on free and reduced lunch status), the district delivers non-traditional instructional days using Google Classroom, Edgenuity, and Blackboard on snow days.
86% of students at lunch and 73% of students at breakfast rely on school meals, making school closures not only harmful to student learning, but their physical health. Through targeted meal drop-off points in public libraries, churches, and housing developments, the district also delivers school lunch on non-traditional instruction days.
