Improving K-3 literacy with network improvement science
Refining and strengthening structures to identify, test, adapt, and more fully implement evidence-based instructional practices

We're working with two elementary schools to identify a specific problem and opportunity in the way we work toward literacy outcomes (particularly around writing), map factors that may contribute to differences in outcomes, and try a series of improvements in that area. Leadership teams and teacher teams both schools operate as part of a Networked Improvement Community (NIC) to collectively address problems of practice and learn from each other in a structured way. The teams work through four phases:

  1. Understanding the problem and its causes
  2. Developing buy-in for improvement
  3. Identifying improvement ideas
  4. Rapid testing of a refined system

Long-term plans for scale and spread of the project include scaling within the sites at different grade levels and then applying the lessons learned from and with the teachers around Network Improvement Science to all sites as a method of identifying, testing and adapting practice.
