District policies require service learning and job shadowing for all K-12 students

The GLS Board developed two model policies requiring all K-12 students to complete many service learning and job shadowing hours. This work allows our students to not only give back to the community but also experience career pathways and determine areas of interest and—just as important—areas of disinterest. By the time students enter middle school, they should have a sense of areas of interest and specific pathways currently offered at the middle school level: computer science, biomedical, aviation, design thinking, and pre-engineering. All pathways are current and specific to our area's job force needs.

Flexibility is provided for students that are out of school on days when there were opportunities to complete the required service learning or job shadowing. Also, each building has created a list of prospects, business partners, and contact information to assist students and families with making the necessary arrangements to complete these requirements.
